Two with local ties graduate from military training

Two people with local ties graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas and another was awarded a four-year full ROTC scholarship from the U.S. Army.

Air Force Airman First Class Markeisia S. Venett and Air Force Airman First Class Katie A. McDermott graduated from training. Venett, the daughter of Sascha Venett-Davis, of New London, graduated from Ledyard High School in 2009 and from Three Rivers Community College in 2012. McDermott, the daughter of Edward McDermott, of Uncasville, is a 2010 graduate of Montville High School.

Andrew James Papathanasiou, of Waterford, was awarded a ROTC scholarship. Papathanasiou, the son of Alex and Georgia Papathanasiou, is a 2012 graduate of Waterford High School. He is currently a freshman at Northeastern University in Boston, majoring in chemical engineering. He will receive his commission as an officer in the Army after graduating in May 2017.
