Federal and state officials are announcing $6 million in federal money to pay for repairs and improvements at the port at Quonset in North Kingstown.
Officials say the $6 million for Quonset will go to reconstruct a bulkhead that was damaged in Hurricane Irene. The new bulkhead will be taller than the previous one.
U.S. Sen. Jack Reed says the work will prevent future flood damage, and strengthen Rhode Island's economy by creating jobs and attracting business.
Farther north at the state's other major port, Gov. Lincoln Chafee (and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras plan to make an announcement regarding the "economic future of the Port of Providence." They did not immediately give details.
