Asked in 1963 about the assassination of Presidnet John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X called it a case of the "chickens coming home to roost." And now, those same words are an apt description of the horror perpetrated on Dec. 14 in Newtown.

Connecticut has long profited from the manufacture and sale of firearms. Samuel Colt revolutionized the design and construction of guns at his factory in Hartford. Gun makers Sturm-Ruger, Winchester, Remmington, and Connecticut Valley Arms, to name a few, have flourished in our state. They are responsible for thousands of guns and millions of rounds of ammunition on the streets of America and around the world.

To be fair, the men and women who work for the gun industry are not evil people, they have sisters, brothers, and children themselves. But, their products have the capacity for wanton destruction when they fall into in the wrong hands. Violence begets violence, and the chickens have come home to roost, and our precious children and their courageous teachers have paid the price.

One can only hope that if ever confronted with a similar situation one would have the love and braveness of heart of Victoria Soto who gave her last measure of selfless devotion by shielding her young wards.

The NRA has proposed stationing an armed officer in every U.S. school as a way to defend against mass shootings like the one at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. Do you support the NRA's proposal?
Yes, it's a sensible plan. An armed officer would serve as a deterrent and he or she would be able to stop an active gunman before more lives were lost.
No, I'm disappointed the NRA didn't come out with any serious suggestions.
Armed officers would help, but we also need stronger gun control laws.
