New London — Police Tuesday recovered the body of a city man who they say appears to have committed suicide off City Pier.
Police taped off the downtown pier and late Tuesday afternoon were awaiting the medical examiner’s office to retrieve the body.
Deputy Police Chief Peter Reichard said the 59-year-old man left a note for his family indicating that he planned to commit suicide. Further investigation led police to City Pier, Reichard said, where officers found evidence that someone had entered the water. The Coast Guard and state police dive team were called for assistance, Reichard said, and the body was recovered around 2 p.m.
The body will go to the medical examiner’s office to determine a cause and manner of death, Reichard said.
