Today, the League of Women Voters of Southeastern Connecticut celebrates the 93rd anniversary of the national organization's founding. Formed as a "political experiment" shortly before the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the League aimed to help newly enfranchised women to exercise their responsibilities as voters. Since its inception in 1920, the non-partisan organization has grown to more than 800 state and local leagues, comprising both women and men, in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Our local League is proud to continue the League's mission to encourage informed and active participation in government, increase understanding of major public policy issues and influence public policy through education and advocacy. During the past year, our League conducted numerous activities and events to further these goals, including voter registration sessions at high schools, colleges and local sites, candidates' forums and debates, and community presentations featuring state officials such as Secretary of the State Denise Merrill.

Our League is an affiliate of the LWV of Connecticut and the LWV of U.S. The LWV neither supports nor opposes any political party or candidate.

What did you think of President Obama's State of the Union speech Tuesday night?
I thought he gave a moving speech that was a call to action on gun control, climate change and the economy.
I thought it was heavy on platitudes and light on details, like most State of the Union addresses.
I didn't hear a word he said; Speaker John Boehner's death mask of a face had me transfixed.
What was up with VP Joe Biden's rose-colored glasses?
No idea; I was watching the exciting Bruins-Rangers game.
