The Exchange Club of Madison recently honored Ian Richardson, son of Lori and Tom Richardson, with the David Bell Scholarship Award for Youth of the Month for January 2013. The Daniel Hand High School (DHHS) senior was nominated by the DHHS faculty and completed a comprehensive application, including an essay entitled "Youth Volunteerism: Working Magic in Our Communities;" performed outstanding DHHS and community activities; attained an excellent grade-point average; and demonstrated personal achievements and awards.
David Bell, Madison Exchange Club chairman of the Youth of the Month Program, presented Richardson with a $200 award and a commemorative Exchange Club plaque. Richardson is a High Honors student and a CAPT Scholar; a member of the National Honor Society, the Exchange Club Excel Club, and Diversity "Dream Team" Club; a member of the DHHS marching band, the symphonic concert, show, and jazz bands, as well as the Waes Haeil Madrigals, and Encore, of which he is president. He was also elected captain of the DHHS soccer team, on which he was All-State, All-Area, and All-SSC Hammonasett Division.
Richardson has received a number of music awards, including a recent award of All-Eastern Concert Band and CAS-Excellence in Music award. He also received the St. Michael's Book award, World Language award, and the National Society of High School Scholars award. In preparation for college next year, Richardson has applied to WPI, MIT, McGill, and Dartmouth College. He plans to major in engineering and business.
