Seventeen students from Valley Regional High School recently took part in a High School Model United Nations conference at Clark University. The Department of Political Science at Clark has hosted this simulation for several years. Valley students spent the entire day in committee sessions dealing with their specific issues. Paul Myers and Katelynn Maxwell were in the Kenya 2013 Pre-Election Coalition Forming Committee. Rachael Aikens was in the Russian-Georgian Crisis of 2008. All other students were representing delegations from seven countries discussing the Culture of Violence, a committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons.
By the end of the day, students had written and worked through Position Papers, Working Papers, and finally came up with Draft Resolutions, full of operative clauses and amendments. Each committee or assembly had to complete the day with a full resolution that was voted on by all the members and passed. There was a great deal of debate and compromise among the delegates.
