Groton - The union representing firefighters with the City of Groton Fire Department have announced its endorsements for the May 6 election in the city.

The IAFF Local 1964, representing 15 city firefighters, endorsed incumbent Democratic City Mayor Marian Galbraith and City Clerk Debra Patrick along with the following people for city council: Democrats Bill Jervis, Larry Gerrish, Andrew Ilvento, Stephen Sheffield and Republicans Keith Hedrick and Jay Dempsey.

Union President Daniel D. Tompkins said it was the first time he recalled the union making endorsements. He said the endorsements were made based on a candidate’s record of support for the Groton fire fighters along with evaluation of a questionnaire each candidate was required to answer.

“It is an honor to announce these endorsements for well deserving candidates,” Tompkins said. “Many we have worked with in the past and we look forward to working with the others to continue to provide for the health and safety of our members as well as that of our fellow citizens.”
