My reaction to Mayor Finizio's support of the Renzulli Academy proposal - shocked, sad, and disappointed.
No hint of research, no glimmer of informed opinion, only anecdotal evidence and a silly notion that he gleaned from his partner who's going through grad school. He didn't have to take a position on Renzulli, but he did, and now retracting isn't an option. No matter the body of evidence showing its Connecticut constitutional violations and moral wrongs.
As for the political aspect - it sure was safe and looked good. Who in the city, the masses, could hear him speak in support of a gifted program and not agree? Especially when a flurry of media parrots the "official" statements, blatantly becomes paid shills to sell it, or even lies that New London had already approved funding for the schools.
Well, it's easy for me to disagree because I'm fortunate enough to have the time to research everything. The reality is too few parents are capable of this, and not because they're lazy or don't care - they have their own priorities, jobs, and lives.
There are few issues I disagree with the mayor on, especially so passionately, but I hope to make his decision to take a side on this regrettable.
No tooth nor nail will be spared my friends.
