Lisbon's Cassidy posts first 2013 victory at Speedbowl

Two defending champions - Lisbon's Ken Cassidy Jr. and Paul French - won their first races of the 2013 season at the Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday night.

Cassidy captured the 25-lap Mini Stocks feature and French won the 25-lap SK Light Modifieds race. The other feature winners Saturday night were Kyle James (SK Modified), Groton's Bruce Thomas Jr. (Late Model) and Ryan Waterman (Street Stock).

James started last in the 35-lap SK Modified race that featured eight cautions, moved his way up to third following a lap 24 melee and got around Gales Ferry's Todd Ceravolo on the restart to take second. James pulled took the lead from Ed Puleo on lap 27 and then handled one final restart with three laps remaining.

Thomas won the 30-lap Late Model feature, his 55th career victory. He found room under Waterford's Dillon Moltz coming out of turn four on lap 27 (the two did make contact) and cruised to the checkered flag.

Waterman was a first-time winner in the 25-lap Street Stock feature, a race that was completed caution free. He took the lead from Dan Darnstaedt on lap 7 and held off a charge by Chris Meyer over the final five laps.

Cassidy started the 25-lap Mini Stock race fourth, quickly moved up to second and challenged race leader Bill Leonard on lap 13. The two battled until Cassidy made a pass with two laps remaining and earned his 44th career win.
