East Hampton - A woman died and another was seriously injured Monday when a tree fell on them at Salmon River State Forest, according to a spokesman for the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

A man who was with the women was uninjured in the incident, which was reported at about 2 p.m., according to DEEP spokesman Dwayne Gardner.

One of the women was pronounced dead at the scene, Gardner said. The other suffered a leg injury and was taken to Hartford Hospital by the Lifestar helicopter.

Gardner had no further information on the woman’s condition, and the names of the victims have not yet been released.

The incident occurred on shore, Gardner said, and is under investigation by the department’s conservation police unit
