It was a big day for UConn second baseman LJ Mazzilli, who was named District II Player of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers just moments before learning he was selected in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the New York Mets.
Mazzilli, who completed his career by leading UConn to the Big East tournament title and its third NCAA tournament berth in four years, was the 116th selection overall.
Mazzilli, whose father Lee played for the Mets, was taken in the ninth round by the Minnesota Twins after his junior year, but opted to return to UConn, where he was a first-team All-Big East pick and a second-team All-America pick after hitting .354 with 15 doubles, six home runs, 51 RBI, 50 runs and 29 stolen bases in 33 attempts.
