Sun sign Castro Marques, waive Lacy

Published June 11. 2013 4:00AM

The Connecticut Sun signed guards Iziane Castro Marques and Sydney Carter Monday, and waived fellow guard Natasha Lacy to make room on the roster.

Castro Marques, a 10-year WNBA veteran, spent the second half of last season with the Washington Mystics, playing in 11 games while averaging 3.1 points per game. The six-foot guard has played in 278 games during her career and averaged 9.7 points and two rebounds per game. She played for Sun coach Anne Donovan during the Seattle Storm's 2005 WNBA championship season.

Carter was signed as a replacement player under the emergency hardship clause after injuries to guards Renee Montgomery (sprained left ankle) and Tan White (broken right finger), leaving Connecticut with just nine players. Carter, who is 5-6, was selected in the third round (27th overall) of last year's WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky. She played one game for the Sky.

"I'm excited about having Izi join our roster," Donovan said. "She brings a wealth of experience and scoring punch to our perimeter game. With the injuries to Renee and Tan, it was important that we replace that lost experience. Having coached her in Seattle, I'm familiar with her all-around skill set at both ends of the floor and she will strengthen our guard play."

Montgomery could be out two-to-three more weeks, and White could be sideline at least two more weeks.

Lacy signed with the Sun as a free agent on February 21 and played in three games.

Connecticut plays at Indiana Wednesday on ESPN2 at 8 p.m.
