Sun acquire Pedersen from Tulsa

Published June 21. 2013 4:00AM

The Connecticut Sun made a move to bolster their frontcourt Thursday by acquiring Kayla Pedersen from the Tulsa Shock in exchange for its second-round pick in the 2014 WNBA draft.

To make room for the 6-foot-4 Pederson, the Sun waived forward Ashley Walker. Pedersen is expected to join the team in time for Sunday's 3 p.m. game against the Atlanta Dream at Mohegan Sun Arena.

"Kayla is a young player with good size and a promising upside who will certainly fill a need on our roster, adding much-needed height to our lineup," Sun coach Anne Donovan said in a statement released by the team. "Unfortunately, the downside is that we have to make room for her by waiving Ashley Walker, who worked extremely hard to contribute to our team."

Pedersen, a two-time All-Pac-10 pick at Stanford, was takend with the No. 7 overall pick by the Shock in the 2011 draft. She has averaged 5.4 points and four rebounds per game during her career, appearing in 69 games with 50 starts for the Shock. She scored a season-high 10 points at Seattle on June 7, and had six rebounds in a loss to Atlanta on May 25.

At Stanford, Pedersen scored 1,941 career points and graduated as the program's career rebounding leader with 1,266. She started 150 games in four seasons.
