Groton - A motor vehicle accident on the southbound side of Interstate 95 has contributed to some traffic backups this evening.

State police said the accident, which they described as minor, occurred between exits 88 and 89. At 9:30 p.m., police said they expected the accident to be cleared within the hour.

The accident occurred in an area where road work has closed one lane for a 2 ½ mile stretch between the exits, according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation. The road work and closure of the right lane will continue until 6 a.m. Thursday.
