Referencing the July 3 commentary by Cal Thomas - "DOMA ruling signals our moral descent" - how'd he come up with descent? Once we've got consenting adults, the Defense of Marriage Act is defenseless, yet Thomas claims arrogant self-righteousness to know, and advocate, about laws for or against marriage between complete strangers? Presumably with a straight face?
I don't have a straight face (a wince is more like it) when I repeat his Supreme Court "raise itself to a level higher than the Creator" line, which might play well in Bible school. But listen hard, Mr. Thomas, please know that you're in public. "Boundaries serve a purpose," you write. Agreed! But Genesis 2:24 and Judges 17:6 have no place here, despite their Bible school hit parade relevance, because the Supreme Court interprets the U.S. Constitution, never the Bible.
Life in a community compels us to think of freedom not as the right to do as we please but as the opportunity to do what is right, which means no one has the right to impose their personal idea of god on anyone else. Ultimately, if you can't live by those boundaries, then I suggest you stay in Bible school.
