How's this for perfect day — a cross country race through fields and apple orchards followed by a doughnut eating contest.
The popular Scott's Yankee Farmer in East Lyme will stage its first Apple Festival 5K and Fun Run on Sunday, Sept. 15 to kick off the apple picking season. There will be kids games, contests, cider donuts, horse drawn wagon rides, massages and apple picking.
Katie Scott, whose in-laws Tom and Karen Scott, own the farm, said it staged a one-mile obstacle course race for ages 6 to 12 last year that attracted about 75 kids.
After the race, the farm surveyed those who came and discovered there was interest in a timed race for adults as well.
She said they hope the chip-timed race next weekend will attract 200 people, not bad for a first-year event.
The description on the race website about the 3.2-mile course states that sights "will include views of Farmer Tom's workshop, the historic cider mill building, the orchards, crops that you've been enjoying all summer long and the back woods of the land. The terrain will be a mixture of field, rocks, woods, and possibly mud (Your feet may get wet)."
"It's a part of the farm people don't usually see," Scott said.
She added the course is mostly flat with a few hills.
As for the doughnut eating contest, Scott said a decision hasn't been made yet whether it will be more like bobbing for apples or as many as you can eat.
The half-mile fun run begins at 10 a.m. followed by the 5K at 10:30 a.m. The farm is located 291 North Bride Brook Road.
Online registration is at www.onestoprace.com/search/event.aspx?id=22694. through Sept. 11 and the again on race day. Advance entry is $12 and $15 on race day.
