Fitch's Terrel Scholle (2) stays a stride ahead of Stonington's Zach Poirier during last Friday's game in Groton, a 34-20 Fitch win. The Falcons host No. 3 Norwich Free Academy tonight in an ECC Large Division game.

Today's games

(All games 6:30 p.m.)

Killingly at Ledyard

Team records: Killingly (2-0, 1-0 ECC Medium Division); Ledyard (2-0, 1-0)

Last week: Killingly defeated Waterford, 28-21; Ledyard defeated Bacon Academy, 49-20.

Outlook: Is Killingly for real? We'll find out around 9 p.m. tonight. The Redmen are playing well and are unbeaten. And they gave Ledyard a decent game at Killingly a year ago. But the Colonels are clearly the best team Killingly has played to date. The winner goes into first place by itself in the division.

NFA at Fitch

Team records: NFA (1-0, 0-0 ECC Large Division); Fitch (1-1, 0-0)

Last week: NFA defeated Montville, 48-21; Fitch defeated Stonington, 34-20.

Outlook: Fitch won its first game for new coach Jordan Panucci, running the double wing effectively against Stonington. This, however, is a major upgrade in competition. NFA, ranked third in The Day's latest state coaches' poll, isn't merely the league's most potent offense, its speed could expose Fitch's special teams deficiencies. Fitch has allowed four kickoff returns for touchdowns in two games. This is the Large Division opener for both teams.

Plainfield at St. Bernard/Norwich Tech

Team records: Plainfield (0-2, 0-1, ECC Small Division); St. Bernard (1-1, 1-1)

Last week: Plainfield lost to Windham, 36-15; St. Bernard defeated Woodstock Academy, 31-0.

Outlook:Could this be an honest-to-goodness winning streak for the Saints? Plainfield has struggled in losses to New London and Windham. St. Bernard/Norwich Tech, meanwhile, earned a feel-good win over Woodstock last week in which Devin Gleason ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third. The Saints could move over .500 overall and in the ECC Small Division.

Stonington at Montville

Team records: Stonington (0-1, 0-0 ECC Medium Division); Montville (0-2, 0-0)

Last week: Stonington lost to Fitch, 34-20; Montville lost to NFA, 48-21.

Outlook: Perhaps the weekend's best game. Two teams that should win more than they lose. Two teams that are desperate. The Bears showed some flashes last week, but ultimately couldn't stop the run. That could be good news for the Indians, who welcomed leading rusher Jeremiah Crowley back from suspension last week. Montville's defense, meanwhile, will have its issues with quarterback Divante White and running back Harry Calmar.

Saturday's games

Waterford at Bacon Academy, 10:30 a.m.

Team records: Waterford (0-2, 0-1 ECC Medium Division); Bacon (0-2, 0-1)

Last week: Waterford lost to Killingly 28-21; Bacon lost to Ledyard 49-20.

Outlook: The Lancers didn't play all that badly overall last week, but allowed two scores in the last four minutes to lose. We'll see whether they answer coach Mike Ellis' challlenge: "They've got to make a choice right now," he said. "What are they going to do? Are they going to tank it and (say) we can't win. Or are they going to decide we've gotten a lot better than where we were a week ago and we've got to continue to go in the right direction and if we do that we're going to be okay."

East Lyme at Woodstock, 1:30 p.m.

Team records: East Lyme (1-1); Woodstock (0-1)

Last week: East Lyme defeated Griswold, 20-7; Woodstock lost to St. Bernard/Norwich Tech 31-0.

Outlook: The Vikings christened their new home turf field with a victory last week, led by senior captain and running back Eric Stirtan, who finished with 20 carries for 167 yards and fourth-quarter touchdowns of 66 and 36 yards.
