Chiefs' Houston off to sack-filled start
Georgia coach Mark Richt knew that Justin Houston had all the physical tools to be a smashing NFL success. The young linebacker just needed to screw his head on straight.
Well, now it's bolted on in such a way that his eyes are focused right on the quarterback.
The never-stop motor of the Kansas City defense, Houston has already piled up 7 1/2 sacks through the first three weeks. That freakish pace puts him on track to have 40 by the end of the season.
Nobody expects him to keep up that rate, of course, but the notion that Houston could at least approach the NFL record of 22 ½ set by the Giants' Michael Strahan in 2001 is a possibility.
"Justin had the body type; he had the work ethic. I'm not surprised at all to see him do well," Richt said this week. "The guy had 4 ½ sacks in a game, so what are you going to say?"
Falcons' Samuel looking forward to battling Brady
Atlanta's Asante Samuel expects more balls to be thrown his way Sunday night when the Falcons host the New England Patriots and the cornerback's former teammate Tom Brady.
"I'm kind of used to not getting too many balls my way," Samuel said Thursday. "I'm sure my boy Brady will come at me."
Samuel spent his first five NFL seasons with the Patriots and won two Super Bowls with New England from 2003-'07.
"We had a lot of battles," Samuel said of Brady. "He loves to try to be perfect as possible, and the way he prepares every day is true professionalism. He has the total package."
Wilson shows off special new wallet
Russell Wilson brought along a gift to his weekly media session that the Seattle Seahawks quarterback received earlier this week from a young hospital patient.
Wilson on Thursday showed off a Seattle Seahawks wallet made from duct tape by an 11-year-old patient named Allison at Seattle Children's Hospital. Since arriving in Seattle, Wilson has regularly visited patients at the hospital on Tuesdays - the Seahawks' day off - during the season.
Wilson, who seemed genuinely excited about the gift, posed for pictures with the wallet after his press conference ended. The wallet included numerous team logos and had "R. Wilson" on the outside.
Said Wilson: "It's like perfect."
