Author Robert Macomber at Custom House

Published October 03. 2013 4:00AM

Given the authenticity oozing from Robert N. Macomber's Honor Series of novels about fictional American naval officer Peter Wake, it's a shame his Friday speech and book signing in New London can't take place on a boat.

The next best thing, though, is that the event takes place at the Custom House Maritime Museum in New London. That's sufficiently briny.

Though Macomber will indeed sign and answer questions about his books, he's also appearing as an award-winning historian and will deliver an address called "1863 - New England's Confederate Summer."

The remarks concern a period of the Civil War when the Navy of the Stars 'n' Bars staged a series of raids along the New England sea coast.

Robert Macomber, 3 p.m. Friday, Custom House Maritime Museum, 150 Bank Street, New London; $8 NLMS members, $12 general; (860) 447-2501, nlmaritimesociety.org.

He was a bad hire and this is a good move.
Should have given him the chance to finish the season.
Who cares. I'm waiting for basketball season.
Won't matter. UConn will never be big time.
