O’Brien retrospective opens at LACFA

"Chuck Brown" by Tim O'Brien

It's always a bit strange when famous people have the same name. Consider two guys named Tim O'Brien. One's an author, most known for his book "The Things They Carried." Then there's Tim O'Brien the artist/illustrator, whose portraits have a spectacular element of magical realism, while the illustrations he's done for the likes of Time, Rolling Stone, Newsweek, The Atlantic Monthly and National Geographic have won top awards and are hanging in museums all over the country.

Speaking of the latter, "Tim O'Brien - Portraits and Illustrations: A Retrospective," is a new exhibit opening Friday at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Art's Chauncey Stillman Gallery. O'Brien will deliver a lecture there on Oct. 18. Show runs through Jan. 11, 2014. 84 Lyme St., Old Lyme. Hours 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mon.-Sat.; (860) 434-3571, lymeacademy.edu.
