Jacquelin Gorman at Bank Square Books

Published October 17. 2013 4:00AM

Recently, Bank Square Books hosted the hilarious comic novelist Christopher Moore.

That appearance is not to be confused with the store's evening reception tonight in honor of the decidedly darker author Jacquelin Gorman. Her latest book, "The Viewing Room," is a heart-carving collection of loosely connected stories dealing with grief, death and dying through the perspective of a young female hospital chaplain.

If the tone and subject matter is somber, rest assured the book is gorgeously written and offers moments of redemption and resolution. "The Viewing Room" was also a nominee for the National Book Award and won the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction.

Gorman will discuss her work, sign books, and refreshments will be served.

Jacquelin Gorman, 5-7 tonight, Bank Square Books, 53 West Main St., Mystic; free; copies of "The Viewing Room" available for sale; (860) 536-3795, banksquarebooks.com.
