Local Colleges: Coast Guard men finish second at NEWMAC cross country meet

Boston - The Coast Guard Academy men's cross country team placed five runners in the top 14 and finished second in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference championship at Franklin Park Sunday.

Gary Ezzo led the Bears with a third-place finish (25:35) on the 8-kilometer course, Zachary Velasquez was seventh (25:59), Joey O'Connell was ninth (26:04), Jon Lash was 13th (26:17) and Stephen Horvath was 14th (26:27). All five made the all-NEWMAC team.

Coast Guard had 44 points as MIT won its 16th straight title with 18. MIT's Roy Wedge won the race with a time of 25:07.

Women's cross country

• Coast Guard finished third at the NEWMAC championship at Franklin Park in Boston. MIT won its seventh straight title with 23 points, Wellesley was second with 70 and Coast Guard had 99.

Beth Gollin was Coast Guard's top finisher, finishing the 5-kilometer course in 18:49. Teammate Gretchen Krause joined Gollin on the all-NEWMAC team with an 11th-place (19:02). Also scoring for the Bears were Carrie Smith (22nd, 19:32), Meghan Kalinowski (36th, 19:53) and Jenn Haley (38th, 19:59).

Field hockey

• UConn closed out its regular season with a 3-0 win over Yale. Roisin Upton scored twice and Anna Middendorf also scored for the Huskies (15-4), who host the Big East Conference tournament this week.

Wrestling

• Three Coast Guard Academy wrestlers placed second in the season-opening Messiah Invitational on Saturday night in Mechanicburg, Pa.

The Bears finished fifth in the nine-team field with 63.5 points (host Messiah won with 128). For Coast Guard, Mike Shermot (165 pounds), Marc Wagner (184) and Nate Giorgio (133) all placed second while junior Mark Howard (197) was fourth.

Shermot had a pair of technical falls before losing to Stephen Aiello of Wheaton (Ill.) 7-4 in the final; Wagner had back-to-back pins and a 4-3 decision before Messiah's Josh Thompson pinned him in the final (3:19); and Giorgio won by scores of 17-2, 16-0 and 6-0 before losing in the final to Ryan O'Boyle of McDaniel, 10-5.

Men's soccer

• UConn completed its first regular season in the American Athletic Conference with a 1-0 victory over SMU on Saturday night in Dallas.

Freshman Cyle Larin scored his fourth game-winning goal of the season for the Huskies (9-2-5, 4-0-4), who will host a quarterfinal game this Saturday against an opponent to be determined. Larin scored his eighth goal of the season less than three minutes into the game for the Huskies, who ran their unbeaten streak to 11.
