Ali Akbar Mohammadi Rafie, the man who shot and killed three Brooklyn musicians early Monday before turning the gun on himself, was a former bandmember of Julie Mariani, a New London native.
Mariani, a saxophonist for the Free Keys, wasn't present during the rampage because she'd returned to her New London home to pick up winter clothes, according to her mother, New London attorney Linda Mariani.
Two of the dead, Soroush and Arash Farazmand, played in the Yellow Dogs and the third, Ali Eskandarian, was a member of the Free Keys. Rafie played bass for the Free Keys until about a year ago, when, according to a statement released by the Yellow Dogs, he was dismissed for musical and personal differences.
The two bands were close friends after having met in the underground rock scene in Tehran, Iran, in 2006. After the Yellow Dogs moved to the United States in 2010, Free Keys followed a year later. For almost four years, several members of both acts shared a home/rehearsal space and management.
