UConn stunned top-ranked UCLA in a penalty kick shootout on Sunday night to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament
The Huskies (12-2-8) will travel to No. 8 Virginia either Friday or Saturday with a trip to soccer's Final Four on the line. Virginia ousted Marquette 3-1 in its third round match.
UConn rallied from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits in regulation to force overtime, then following 20 minutes of scoreless soccer, UConn won on penalty kicks 5-4. Both teams missed once in the first round of PKs (both teams are awarded five kicks) before Alex Sanchez converted for the Huskies and UCLA's Victor Munoz had his shot stopped by UConn All-American goalie Andre Blake.
Freshman Cyle Larin scored a pair of goals for the Huskies, including the game-tying goal with 21 minutes remaining in regulartion, while Kwame Awuah also scored a goal. UConn outshot the Bruins 17-11 and Blake made two saves.
