Savage named bank president

Published December 21. 2013 4:00AM

Webster Bank's holding company has announced the appointment of Joseph J. Savage as president and board of directors member, effective Jan. 1.

Waterbury-based Webster Financial Corp. said Savage, executive vice president and head of commercial banking, will report to James C. Smith, Webster's chairman and chief executive.

Savage replaces Gerald P. Plush, who resigned suddenly in September to pursue other business interests. Plush had been widely regarded as the Webster executive most likely to succeed Smith.

"This promotion recognizes Joe's contributions toward building commercial banking into the fast-growing, high-performing business segment it is today," Smith said in a statement.
