After reading the editorial "More Gun Nonsense," (Dec. 9), I ask: Why do we assume that politicians are experts on all subjects when nothing could be further from the truth?

An entirely plastic operational gun is as inconceivable as an honest senator. Components like barrels, springs and firing pins must be metallic from an engineering standpoint.

How ironic that the term "Liberator" should be used to describe the 3-D product mentioned. The FP-45 Liberator was a crude handgun assembled from stamped components. It was manufactured for delivery to occupied regions during WWII and was designed to incapacitate an enemy and allow for the commandeering of his issued firearm.

There exists a stark reality contrary to The Day's Disneyesque fantasies that gun bans are panaceas leading to a society where all exist in bubble-wrapped safety. Thugs and gang-bangers could not care less about legalities. Making good people helpless does not make bad people harmless. The ignorance exhibited by The Day has led me to conclude that its editorial staff is unqualified to comment on political or logistical matters pertaining to firearms.
