Who needs those pesky storylines anyway? "Broadway Rox" culls favorite songs from musical-theater shows and collects them for an energized concert.
A funny thing, too: Since there are so many jukebox musicals these days - shows built around already-existing hits - "Broadway Rox" makes use of songs that were pop chart-toppers and concert fodder long before they were on the Great White Way. Meaning: "Dancin' Queen" was an ABBA single and then a part of the stage show "Mamma Mia!" "Pinball Wizard" was on The Who's album "Tommy" and later in the theater production of "Tommy."
"Broadway Rox" uses some original-to-Broadway songs, too, like "Defying Gravity" from "Wicked" and "Seasons of Love" from "Rent."
When the show hits Foxwoods' Fox Theater for a three-night run starting Friday, it will feature six Broadway performers and a five-piece band.
The creative team behind "Broadway Rox" are, naturally, Broadway stalwarts. They include Rob Evan, who has been in "Jekyll & Hyde" and "Les Miserables"; Jason Howland, "Jekyll & Hyde" and composer of Broadway's "Little Women"; Rich Affannato, producer of "Peter and the Starcatcher" and "Silence! The Musical"; and Thom Schilling, "Les Miserables" and "Fosse."
