The fictional Almost, Maine, exists in the upper reaches of the state, nearly into Canada, and it's a place of cold hands and warm hearts.
John Cariani's comic "Almost, Maine" pulls together a series of vignettes about couples falling in and out of love. Its playwright grew up in Maine, so he knows the state's personality well. He is also, by the way, an actor, having earned a Tony nomination for the 2004 reival of "Fiddler on the Roof" and having been a recurring role as CSU Tech Julian Beck on "Law & Order."
"Almost, Maine" was developed at the Cape Cod Theatre Project a decade ago and was staged Off Broadway. It's enjoyed a lot of productions since then around the world.
The latest: The Saybrook Stage Company is producing "Almost, Maine" tonight through Sunday at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center.
