North Stonington — A Stonington man was seriously injured Sunday night after he was hit by a car on Route 2 near the Holly Green Plaza.

Police said Kenneth Startz, 53, of 37 Wamphassuc Road, was in the roadway removing a table from the westbound lane on Route 2 when he was struck by a car driven by Serena Chen, 34, of Westerly, R.I. Police did not say how the table ended up on the road.

Startz was flown by Life Star helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was listed Monday in serious condition.

Police said Chen was not injured in the accident, but her vehicle did sustain moderate damage.

The accident remains under investigation.
