Greg Kinnear is perfectly cast as the titular rake, a handsome, charming lawyer who can barely dog paddle through life because a litany of self-destructive traits - womanizing, gambling - have him owing money to a vast array of folks including bookies and his ex-wife. The thing is, everyone likes him in spite of his failings. One of his best pals is the bookie's leg-breaker, who has to occasionally interrupt social outings with Rake to punch him as a remider that he owes cash. It sounds far-fetched, but part of the magic is the almost farcical excess. The plots are clever and the characters are wonderfully developed and performed by a great cast. It's not too late in the storyline to climb aboard; you'll pick up the necessary minutiae quickly.
