Salem — A 21-year-old Salem man died Friday morning in a crash on Route 354 in Salem.

Phillip R. Gaudette III of 300 Buckley Road in Salem was driving a 2006 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck east on Route 354 when state police said the truck went off the left side of the road and struck a large tree. Gaudette was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no passengers.

The accident occurred at 7:14 a.m. near the Colchester town line, just east of Brainard Road. Route 354 was closed for several hours during the investigation into the crash.

Friday’s fatal crash was at least the second on Route 354 this year. Charles Malloy, 22, of Uncasville died Feb. 11 when his westbound pickup truck went off the right side of the road just east of Maclyn Drive in Colchester.
