Coast Guard Band presents "Shall We Dance"

Published April 03. 2014 4:00AM

The Coast Guard Band delves into dance rhythms in its Sunday concert, with a little "Sway" mambo here and a little "West Side Story" sound there.

The matinee's title is, appropriately enough, "Shall We Dance," and the band should fun with that theme, considering the works on the program.

Musician 1st Class Megan Weikleenget sings Richard Dworsky's "Goin' to the Dance with You." (Dworsky, by the way, is the keyboardist-music director for "A Prairie Home Companion.") Weikleenget also takes on Cuban composer Osvaldo Farrés' "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" and the aforementioned "Sway," which has been recorded most notably by Dean Martin and Michael Buble.

And Chief Musician Christopher Howard solos on the clarinet in Stravinsky's "Ebony Concerto" and Bernstein's "Prelude Fugue and Riffs."

U.S. Coast Guard Band,

2 p.m. Sunday, Leamy Concert Hall, Coast Guard Academy, 31 Mohegan Ave., New London; free; (860) 701-6826.

How do you see UConn's basketball season ending this year?
I'm feeling lucky. I predict both men's and women's national titles.
The men are lucky to have made it this far. I don't know if they can win against Florida again.
No matter how the men do, we can count on the women to bring home a national title.
The men have the momentum to win and the drive to prove themselves after not being able to compete last year.
I'm more interested in the start of baseball season.
