Democrat Emily Bjornberg of Lyme has announced her candidacy for the State Senate in the 33rd District.

Lyme – Democrat Emily Bjornberg of Lyme has announced her candidacy for the State Senate in the 33rd District covering the towns of Lyme, Old Saybrook, Chester, Clinton, Colchester, Deep River, East Haddam, East Hampton, Essex, Haddam, Portland and Westbrook. State Sen. Art Linares, R-Westbrook, currently holds the seat.

Bjornberg made the announcement at an event this week at the Deep River Town Landing, accompanied by her husband, a veteran of the Iraq War, and children Elliot, 7, and Anna, 4, according to a news release.

“With my candidacy, I am offering the sensibilities and judgment of a working mom as well as someone willing to find common ground with groups and individuals with different points of view,” said Bjornberg in a statement. “I also understand the value and importance of reasonably priced housing, sustainable jobs and high quality public schools because they are the foundation of my family and families throughout our region.”

Former State Representative Jim Crawford of Westbrook, former State Senator Eileen Daily, former East Haddam Selectwoman Mary Ellen Klink and Haddam First Selectman Melissa Schlag spoke at the announcement, according to the release.

Bjornberg is the director of Youth and Family Ministries at the Deep River Congregational Church, a steward of the Lyme Land Conservation Trust and a member of the Lyme Democratic Town Committee. Her extended family owns and operates Reynolds Subaru on Hamburg Cove.

“I will be a strong voice for our region in the majority caucus, where the important policy and legislative decisions are made at the State Capitol,” said Bjornberg. “More importantly, I will never put partisanship ahead of what is best for our communities.”
