Democrats in the 18th District endorsed incumbent state Sen. Andrew Maynard of Stonington for a fifth term at their nominating convention Monday night.

No other Democrats challenged Maynard for the endorsement.

Maynard said the convention was held at the Griswold VFW in honor of longtime attorney and Griswold Democratic Town Committee chairman Richard Duda.

“In Hartford, the name of Richard Duda is synonymous with politics in Eastern Connecticut,” Maynard said.

He said he is running again because he feels there is still a lot of work to do in Hartford.

“I feel like we started to make some headway. This has been our first opportunity to work with a governor from our own party. It’s been both challenging and rewarding,” he said.

With the retirement of some veteran state senators, Maynard said, he will become a senior member of the Democratic caucus, which will give him a great opportunity to focus attention on the needs of southeastern Connecticut.

Those needs “don’t often get the attention they deserve,” he said.

The 18th District comprises Groton, Stonington, North Stonington, Griswold, Plainfield, Sterling, Voluntown and Preston. Maynard is being challenged by Republican Kevin Trejo of Groton.
