I generally like David Collins' columns, but the column, "Fringe-hugger Lori Hopkins-Cavanagh was the best the GOP could do?" (July 30), was a jab below the belt.

Abraham Lincoln once opined that it took but lung power to run for office, and "silent" Cal Coolidge said that, "The business of America is business." Sadly, we have wandered far afield from these concepts.

When you learned Thursday morning that New London and Waterford were expecting a water emergency, what did you do?
I filled my bathtub with water.
I rushed to the grocery store to stock up on bottled water.
I made arrangements to shower at a friend's house in another town.
I didn't react to the initial news, so essentially, I did nothing.
What, me worry? I have a pool in my backyard.
