Amor Towles, discusses his New York Times–bestselling debut novel Rules of Civility. A tale of a watershed year in the life of the fiercely intelligent Katey Kontent, a twenty-something Manhattanite navigating the jazz clubs, boardrooms, boarding houses, and high rises of Depression-era New York City. Towles will discuss how the art of the 1930s, represented in the Gallery’s collection by the work of Stuart Davis and Walker Evans, served to inspire the framing of the novel and to provide a thematic current for Katey’s pivotal encounters and conscious choices in love, career, and friendship that determine her course for years to come. A reception and book signing sponsored by R. J. Julia Booksellers of Madison, Connecticut, will follow.
