“Paris in the Spring”

The Arts Commission of Christ Church will present its final program of the season at 4 p.m. Sunday when Michael Lankester gives a talk entitled “Paris in the Spring.” His talk will focus on Modernism in early 20th-century France as it developed through composers and artists such as Stravinsky and Picasso. Lankester, a British born musician, has enjoyed an eminent international conducting career that also includes work as composer, arranger, and commentator. For 15 years he was music director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.
As a lecturer, Lankester has appeared at the Wadsworth Athenaeum, the Yale Center for British Art and the Mostly Mozart Festival. An especially innovative creation was his “Mrs. Mozart,” a play for actress, singers, chorus and orchestra, which premiered in 1999 starring Academy Award-winning Estelle Parsons.
The program is free and followed by a reception.
Christ Church is located in downtown Westerly at the corner of Broad and Elm streets.

It’s Your Life…Live it Well

A Live Well Workshop series is being offered this spring by facilitators Ron Johnson and Joanne Davis at Niantic Community Church. Live Well is a nationwide, evidence based health promotion program developed by Stanford University to help adults living with chronic conditions manage their health and maintain active, fulfilling lives.
Johnson suffered with chronic illness for 13 years and wanted to be a part of helping people to successfully manage their lives. He and Davis participated in an intensive four day training to facilitate the program that is being co-sponsored by Senior Resources on Aging, the Conn. Department of Public Health, the Conn. Department of Social Services and Niantic Community Church.
“It’s not a support group,” says Davis. “It’s about how to take charge of your life. We are there to empower participants to learn how to manage their lives. Seasoned facilitators report unexpected transformation from people in the program.”
An informational session to learn more about this free program is being held Sunday, March 25 from 1-2 p.m. at the church at 170 Pennsylvania Ave., Niantic, Conn. The six week Live Well Workshop is being held Sundays from 1:00-2:30 p.m. beginning April 15 except for Mother’s Day weekend when it will be held Saturday, May 12.

Two Days of Extended Pose for Artists - Several Instructors

This monitored class will run two days each week, with the same model and pose for two days in a row, providing artists with the opportunity to continue a painting/drawing for a longer period of time. Artists of all levels are welcome to attend one or both sessions each week. The models will primarily be nude figures in relatively simple set-ups to facilitate extended-length poses. Due to the changing light conditions we will use artificial light, which will give the majority of poses the dramatic lighting associated with figurative painters of the 17th century. There will be one 15-minute break during each session. Thank you to our Anonymous Donor for underwriting the cost of the model for these special sessions, allowing us to lower the price significantly!
