Mark Shasha returns to his native New London with Moonjellies and Daydreams: The Art of Mark Shasha, which opens on Saturday, July 14th at the Custom House Maritime Museum. An opening reception with the artist is planned for Saturday, July 14th 2-4pm. Please note: Mark Shasha also will be available at the museum from 1-5pm on Sunday, July 15th. Shasha was first published in the Groton News when he was 14 years old as a student at New London High School. He later continued his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design and moved to Boston to illustrate for The Globe, The Phoenix and other publications. Today his paintings and prints are collected internationally and millions have read his books.

This exhibit will feature early illustrations and work from the 1980's to the present.

Essex Art Association, a non profit art gallery, is featuring its first Open Show of the season “Fluidity”. This is a show juried only for awards and will have a salon atmosphere with over 200 works displayed.

The Exit Gallery features “Nantucket Island, Sconset Paintings” by Luisa Kreis Whiting a resident of Essex, working in oil her works have a hard-edged light that is reminiscent of Edward Hopper. Luisa is daughter of one of the founders of Essex Art Association, her father Henry Kreis was a well known sculptor with an international reputation. He was instrumental in forming the basis for the EAA being an organization that welcomes artists working in all mediums and expressing themselves from the traditional to cutting edge. His sculpture “Woman with a Bowl” may be seen in the entrance to the building.

Parker’s work cross-pollinates the artist /painter and poet psyche, she calls these art forms a visceral construction of space.
Jacqueline Dee Parker teaches at the College of Art & Design at Louisiana State University, she is a mixed media painter and published poet. Dee Parker was awarded the juror’s prize in the 2009 Rauschenberg Tribute Exhibition (Museum of the Gulf Coast).Her poems appear in many literary journals and anthologies, including Atlanta Review, The Southern Review, Chelsea, and American Diaspora: Poetry of Exile, among others, and her work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She is the recipient of a 2007 Artist Fellowship from the Louisiana State Division of the Arts.

Songs, dance and theater by local authors and performers

Teatro Latino de New London invites the community to join local performers and authors at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Custom House Maritime Museum on Bank Street for a performance of songs, dance and theater.
Adelaida Florenciani will sing “Ay, ay, ay de la grifa negra” (Ay, Ay, Ay of the Kinky-Haired Negress) and “Rio Grande de Loiza” (Loiza’s Big River), both with lyrics by Puerto Rican poet Julia de Burgos; “La voz de Poesia”, with lyrics by Resurreccion Espinosa, and “El gaucho vegetariano” (The Vegetarian Cowboy), with lyrics by Charles Frink, who composed the music for the songs and will accompany the singer at the piano. Those interested in The Amistad story should not miss this event.
Highlights include dancer D’Andrea Knox, a graduate of Fitch High School and psychology major at Eastern Connecticut State University.
Two scenes – one in Spanish, one in English – will be performed by Erick Carrion, Michael Crane and Berenith Ruperto, the latter a student at New London High School. Crane, who has been with Teatro Latino since fifth grade, is a junior at Mitchell College. Erick Carrión, Teatro’s assistant director, is majoring in theater at Sacred Heart University in Puerto Rico.
This performance celebrates the publication of the revised edition of a book of plays in Spanish, “El gaucho vegetariano and Other Plays for Students of Spanish,” released in May by University Press of America. The plays are by Teatro’s founding director Resurrección Espinosa, with music by music director Charles Frink. Copies of the book will be available.
The event is free and open to the public. Thames Valley Sustainable Connections and the New London Field of Greens are supporters along with New London Public Library, which is hosting this performance on August 30, sponsored by Connecticut Authors’ Trail.

Departing from their homes, family and friends, they left their secure and comfortable world for the uncertainty and horrors of war. They were driven by their love of country and the belief that the freedom that they knew and cherished at home belonged to all men. The volunteers brought with them the skills and ingenuity to allow them to survive living conditions far worse than most people today have ever experienced. The volunteers from Deep River and surrounding towns showed great courage in battle and their sacrifices helped preserve the Union and the cause of freedom. With respect and admiration we thank them for their defense of home, country and our way of life. They will not be forgotten.

WALKING TOURS TO BEGIN JUNE 23-24

Two newly developed walking tours will be offered to the public for the first time on the weekend of June 23-24, and will run through mid-September.

Historic Guilford Walking Tours are Saturdays and Sundays at 11:00 a.m., and will focus on Guilford’s history on the Green and areas east, with an introduction to downtown’s house museums.

Tours focusing on Guilford’s architectural heritage will be Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 p.m., and will take place on the Green and neighborhoods west.

All tours will meet in front of Town Hall, 31 Park St., and will be led by enthusiastic high school tour guides/researchers. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and children 7-11, and $20 per family. Group tour rates are available upon request.

The Connecticut Ballet Returns to MxCC for Free Performance
