Who could have imagined how our comfortable lives here in safe little Guilford could change so drastically in just three short weeks, some things probably changing forever? But wait—there are things that seem never to change, like our annual tax increases.
Yes, while some of us are losing our jobs, our incomes, benefits, and health insurance and are wondering how to keep bills paid, the town is planning to increase our taxes as normal, partly to give pay raises to town and schools employees who presumably will lose nothing.
In the interests of community solidarity, I suggest that during this crisis, both medical and economic, our town holds off the property tax increase and the unions show community spirit, act responsibly, and defer any increases for their members.
