Marie Tramontana

Marie Tramontana, 78, a long-time resident of Old Saybrook, died on April 8, after a brief illness. Marie was born July 17, 1943, to the late Richard and Mary Gesualdi Tramontana and grew up in New Canaan.

At the age of 11, she contracted polio and spent months in the hospital learning how to walk again with the aid of braces and crutches. She never let her disabilities define or limit her life. She graduated from Marymount College and later earned a master’s degree in school guidance counseling from Fairfield University. She taught at St. Aloysius School in New Canaan before moving to Old Saybrook, where she became a guidance counselor at Westbrook High School in Westbrook and The Morgan School in Clinton. She was a dedicated educator and an inspiration to her students, many of whom she remained close to throughout her life.

After retiring in 2008, she volunteered with Literacy Volunteers, where she continued her passion for teaching and helped adults learn to read. Her favorite pastimes included traveling and art. One of her favorite trips was to southern Italy to visit the area where her grandparents were from. Marie was also an accomplished watercolorist and potter and took delight in her entertaining cats.

Marie is survived by her companion Peter A. White and her beloved sister Ann Tramontana-Veno.

A celebration of her life is planned for later this spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the scholarship fund in her name at The Morgan School, 71 Killingworth Tpke., Clinton, CT 06413.
