The Hand girls’ basketball squad qualified for the Class L State Tournament by winning two of its three games last week. The Tigers earned victories versus Cheshire and Hillhouse before losing to Sheehan in recent action. Hand now has a record of 8-3 on the season.
The Tigers started off its week by claiming a 51-29 win against Cheshire on Jan. 13. Sara Wohlgemuth scored 13 points for Hand, while Brooke Salutari had 12 points and Sophia Coppola chipped in with 11 points.
Wohlgemuth scored 21 points to lead Hand to its 50-41 victory over Hillhouse on Jan. 15. The Tigers qualified for states with this win.
Two nights later, Hand lost to Sheehan by a 49-41 score. Wohlgemuth had 19 points, and Salutari scored 11 points for Head Coach Tim Tredwell’s squad.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The Tigers took their first loss of the season last week, but also qualified for the Division II State Tournament by earning a convincing victory.
Hand dropped a 6-5 overtime decision against Sheehan on Jan. 15. Logan Massey, Teddy Licari, Joey DeAngelis, and Ethan Massey all scored goals for the Tigers to help them rally from a 3-0 first-period deficit and send the game to OT. Ethan Massey tied it up at 5-5 when he scored with 1:50 to play in regulation. Logan Massey had two assists, while Ethan Massey, Tatum Fitzmaurice, and Brendan Ryan contributed one assist apiece. Junior goalie Eric Dillner made 24 saves for the Tigers.
On Jan. 17, Hand punched its ticket into the state tourney when it posted an 8-0 shutout over Scarsdale, New York. DeAngelis had one goal with two assists, John Gagliardi dished out two assists, and Fitzmaurice had a goal with an assist in the victory. Dillner turned aside 22 shots in net.
Hand moved to 3-1 on the year after getting two wins and taking a loss in last week’s matchup.
The Tigers lost to Glastonbury by the score of 125.9-123.2 on Jan. 14. Two days later, Hand swept a tri-meet against Hamden and Law. The Tigers finished with a score of 128.35 to defeat both Law (125.85) and Hamden (118.25).
The Tigers had a busy week that saw the team compete against five teams between two meets. Hand started off the week with a loss to Foran and then split four contests in a meet over the weekend.
On Jan. 15, Hand hosted Foran and lost by a 50-21 score. Joseph Auroura prevailed by pin at the 50-second mark in the 138-pound bout for the Tigers. Cameron Chieppo won by pin at the 1:02 mark of the 145-pound contest. Carter Ganino won via pinfall at 5:18 in the 160-pound matchup. Charlie Wahl won a 7-2 decision at 103 pounds.
On Jan. 18, Hand notched two wins and took two losses at a big home meet. The Tigers defeated Fairfield Ludlowe (46-28) and Notre Dame-West Haven (51-30), while losing to Bristol Central (57-15) and East Haven (58-17) at the meet
